Boy apprehended in Valley shooting

VAN NUYS - A boy was in police custody Sunday on suspicion of shooting a 16-year-old Van Nuys girl in the face, apparently by accident, police said.

The shooting in a home in the 16000 block of Vanowen Street occurred about 2:20 p.m. on Saturday. Police withheld the name of the boy, who was being held at the LAPD's Van Nuys station and was expected to be booked at Juvenile Hall in Sylmar, and that of the girl, who was hospitalized.

The victim's 20-year-old sister told police two boys came over with a gun, and one of them accidentally shot her sister while showing off the weapon, Officer Mike Lopez said.

Gas prices jump another 3 cents

CAMARILLO - Retail gas prices across the country jumped an additional 3 cents, after a 9-cent hike reported earlier this month, according to a survey released Sunday.

The weighted average price for all three grades climbed to $2.36 a gallon by Friday, said Trilby Lundberg, who publishes the semimonthly sem·i·month·ly

Self-serve regular averaged $2.33 a gallon nationwide. Midgrade cost $2.43 a gallon while the price for premium was $2.53.

Prices at the pump have gone up nearly 20 cents since Dec. 2, 2005, Lundberg said.

Among stations surveyed, the lowest average price in the country for regular unleaded was in Portland, Ore., at $2.10 per gallon. The priciest was $2.80 a gallon in Honolulu.

In California, Sacramento had the best deal for regular at $2.33. The most expensive was $2.47 per gallon in San Diego.

No one is injured in apartment fire

Fire damaged a Mid-City apartment building Sunday, but no one was injured, a fire official said.

The two-story building in the 2100 block of South Ridgeley Drive was reported at 6:59 a.m. and put out 14 minutes later, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
