 says revelers can get free rides

Bus and rail service will be offered free to New Year's revelers through the eve of the Rose Parade, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Thursday.

Woman identified in freeway crash

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - A woman who died when her vehicle went over the side of the 118 Freeway was identified Friday as Ardith Sue Caron, 59, of Chatsworth.

 officers said Caron was driving east in the fast lane about 2:30 p.m. Thursday when her vehicle drifted to the left into the dirt median.

She over-corrected and lost control of the vehicle, which went across all eastbound lanes, hitting the raised curb and going down the embankment, police said.

At the bottom of the embankment, the vehicle hit the top of a block wall and overturned, ejecting Caron, who had been wearing a seat belt. She landed on a small road in a town-house complex, where the vehicle landed on its side.

Three plea in plan to scam $1 million

A Castaic couple and a Northridge man pleaded no contest Thursday to felony charges for their role in a scheme to steal more than $1 million, officials said.

Dina A. Saremi, 35, and Kamron Saremi, 31, pleaded no contest to felony counts of grand theft and filing a false state income tax return. Richard Rodriguez, 34, pleaded no contest to felony charges of grand theft and state income tax invasion.

Dina Saremi illegally issued checks to fake companies created by Rodriguez and two others, officials from the state franchise tax board said. Sentencing is scheduled for March.

Insurance loss closes cemetery
