Driver identified in big-rig crash

LANCASTER - An Encino woman was identified as the motorist killed in a collision with a big rig Big Rig was a punk band from the San Francisco Bay Area fronted by singer/songwriter Jesse Michaels. Michaels performed with the group after the break up of his previous project, Operation Ivy, and before forming the band Common Rider.  at a desert intersection.

Jan Neufeld, 77, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 4:05 p.m. Friday crash at 60th Street West and Avenue D, officials said.

 officers said Neufeld's 1995 Mitsubishi had stopped at a stop sign for northbound 60th Street West at its intersection with Avenue D, which is also State Highway 138.

Truck driver Cruz Correjo, 37, of Fresno, was not injured.

Suspects accused in credit card case

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Darryl Battino, 45, and his nephew, Michael Battino, 33, were arrested by Ventura County authorities with help from Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives, said Sgt. John Bomben of the sheriff's Santa Clarita station.

The two are suspected of a ``number of burglaries'' at the Spectrum Club in Santa Clarita, Bomben said. They may also may have been involved in burglaries at the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  Spectrum Club, he said.

Detectives shared video, confirming that the suspects were the same in both counties, Bomben said. The suspects allegedly used stolen credit cards to buy electronics.

Hit-and-run crash kills pedestrian

LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles police are seeking the driver of a vehicle that fatally struck a man pushing a shopping cart loaded with pallets.

The crash in the 2000 block of South Santa Fe Avenue was reported shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Kevin Custard of the Central Traffic Division.

Police had no description of the vehicle.

The victim, who was about 40 years old, died at the scene.

``Indications are he may have been homeless,'' said Custard.

Councilman: He's center of probe

WEST COVINA - City Councilman Roger Hernandez has acknowledged he's the subject of a criminal investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
