Motorist arrested after fatal crash

VALLEY GLEN - A Panorama City motorist was arrested early Sunday on suspicion of murder after his speeding car ran a red light and hit another vehicle, killing one of its passengers, officials said.

A Ford Mustang driven by Victor Alfonso Avila, 21, ran a red light at Coldwater Canyon Boulevard and Vanowen Street, colliding with a Honda Accord, according to officials.

An unidentified occupant of the Honda was ejected and died at the scene, and four other people were injured, officials said.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Two men were wounded, one critically, in a drive-by shooting early Sunday, police said.

The unidentified victims were walking in the 7200 block of Lankershim Boulevard about 12:45 a.m. when they were shot by someone in a white Honda or Acura, officials said.

One of the men was listed in critical but stable condition at County/USC Medical Center. The other victim was treated at a local hospital for an ankle wound.

Crews make quick work of brush fire

Some 100 firefighters supported by three helicopter crews doused a brush fire that broke out Sunday in Griffith Park, and there were no injuries or structure damage, a fire department spokesman said.
