Group seeks end of 1898 war tax

A coalition of taxpayer and business groups is backing an effort by Rep. Gary Miller

Gary Gene Miller (born October 16 1948), American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1999, representing
, R-Brea, to repeal a 107-year-old phone tax imposed to fund the Spanish-American War Spanish-American War, 1898, brief conflict between Spain and the United States arising out of Spanish policies in Cuba. It was, to a large degree, brought about by the efforts of U.S. expansionists. .

The group, MyWireless.Org, whose members include the California Space Authority The California Space Authority (CSA) is a nonprofit corporation representing the commercial, civil, and national defense/homeland security interests of California's diverse space enterprise community in four domains: Industry, Government, Academia, and Workforce.  and several state chambers of commerce, has issued a plea to help repeal what a spokesman calls ``this regressive, inequitable, inefficient tax that serves no rational purpose.'' Miller introduced his bill earlier this year.

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - Five wild birds found dead in Ventura County in late July and early August tested positive for the West Nile virus West Nile virus, microorganism and the infection resulting from it, which typically produces no symptoms or a flulike condition. The virus is a flavivirus and is related to a number of viruses that cause encephalitis. , officials said Thursday.

County health officials said the five birds were found in the cities of Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and Camarillo.

Since Jan. 1, eight birds in the county have tested positive for the virus, including one found dead in Thousand Oaks, two in Camarillo, one in Moorpark and four in Simi Valley.

$800,000 to go for Backbone Trail

Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks, announced Thursday that $800,000 he secured for the Santa Monica Mountains The Santa Monica Mountains are a low transverse range in southern California in the United States. Geography

 will be used to complete the Backbone Trail and improve access from Tarzana to the mountain trail network.

The funds were part of the $286.4 billion transportation bill the president signed into law last week.

According to Sherman, the National Park Service will use $200,000 to build the last 1 1/2 miles of the 60-mile trail linking Will Rogers State Historic Park Will Rogers State Historic Park is the former estate of American humorist Will Rogers. It lies in the Santa Monica mountains in Los Angeles, in the Pacific Palisades area.  to Point Mugu, and $400,000 of the funds will help buy private land along the trail.

About $200,000 will pay for improving trailhead facilities at Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park in Tarzana.

Police arrest man in restroom attack

VENTURA - A transient from Colorado has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman who stopped to use a gasoline station restroom, officials said Thursday.

Around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday the Ventura woman unlocked the door to the restroom at the station at Thompson Boulevard and Oak Street in Ventura, and she was closing it when the man forced his way in, the Ventura Police Department reported.

Police arrested Beau Jerrett Sutton, 24, on suspicion of forcible sexual assault and making criminal threats.

Mega pot awaits L.A. ticket buyer

A Mega Millions lottery ticket purchased at a Los Angeles liquor store is worth $1.4 million, not yet claimed, and is the first million-dollar Mega ticket sold in California, lottery officials said Thursday.

The ticket, purchased at Seven Kings Liquor at 4051 Leimert Blvd., has all five numbers that were drawn Tuesday - 13, 35, 36, 43 and 52, but not the Mega number, 5 - said the lottery's Rosa Escutia.
