Timetable sought on urban dumping

Two City Council members will push for a commitment to reduce the city's reliance on urban dumps when the full panel votes today to extend Los Angeles' contract with Sunshine Canyon Landfill.

 say they want a timetable for drastically cutting the amount of trash dumped in the Granada Hills landfill by 2009.

The city now sends 3,600 tons of trash daily from single-family homes and small apartments to the landfill. Councilman Greig Smith Greig Smith is a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 12th District, which includes Granada Hills, Northridge and other parts of the Western San Fernando Valley. Smith is also a reserve officer for the Los Angeles Police Department.  has crafted a plan that would reduce that total to 500 tons a day by 2009, with the rest handled by recycling or processes to convert trash to energy or compost.

The shooting occurred in the 18500 block of Roscoe Boulevard at 3:15 p.m., according to Officer Robert Bishop of the Los Angeles Police Department's Devonshire Division.

The victim, 18, was walking east on Roscoe near Reseda Boulevard when he was approached by four men. An argument and fight began, and gunfire erupted, Bishop said. The victim, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, ran away but collapsed and died in the courtyard of an apartment building.

The assailants got away in a white Honda.

Woman is killed in gang shooting

Two gang members reportedly began arguing on a sidewalk about 40 yards south of the bus stop. Shots rang out, and the woman fell to the ground and died at the scene. Police took the youth who was the intended target into custody for questioning.
