Holiday weekend off to deadly start

The man was driving west on the 118 Freeway when his Toyota Corolla was rear-ended by a Chevrolet Avalanche about 3:45 a.m. near Sepulveda Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Chevy driver fled the scene.

A second vehicle hit the car, throwing the man from the vehicle. His name was withheld pending notice of his family.

Eresto Mendoza, 20, of Chatsworth turned himself in at a CHP office and was arrested for suspicion of felony hit-and-run, the CHP said.

The half-dozen fatalities this year compares with two during the same period a year ago, according to the CHP.

Robbery suspects sought after heist

THOUSAND OAKS - Three suspects got away with an undetermined amount of merchandise during a Saturday robbery at Hampshire Jewelry, officials said.
