Man convicted of wife's murder

BURBANK - A Burbank man arrested in Nevada in July 2003 on suspicion of killing his wife was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder, authorities said.

Joong Kim, now 55, is facing 15 years to life in state prison when he is sentenced July 26, according to according to

 Burbank police. Kim was arrested on July 23, 2003, after crashing his car on Interstate 15 near the border town of Primm, Nev.

 girlfriend hostage was identified Thursday as a Van Nuys resident.

Sheriff's officials said Thursday that Lazaro Leyva, 29, was shot multiple times by more than one deputy, said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Sheriff's Deputy Tanya Plunkett.

Investigators said Leyva had seen his ex-girlfriend walking along Palmdale Boulevard. He called her over to his vehicle and when she approached, he told her that he was going to die and that if she didn't listen to him, that she would die, too. He then showed her a gun.

She got into the SUV with him and the pair drove to the Mobil gas station on the corner of Palmdale Boulevard and Division Street to fuel up. At some point she then ran to the Crazy Otto's restaurant where Leyva held her hostage. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the man to act the way he did.

Aug. 29 trial date set in Blake suit

BURBANK - A Burbank judge set an Aug. 29 trial date in the wrongful death The taking of the life of an individual resulting from the willful or negligent act of another person or persons.

If a person is killed because of the wrongful conduct of a person or persons, the decedent's heirs and other beneficiaries may file a wrongful death action
 lawsuit brought against Robert Blake by his slain wife's children.

A Van Nuys jury acquitted Blake on March 16 of murdering Bonny Lee Bakley, his wife of six months, near a Studio City restaurant in 2001. The civil suit brought by her children had been on hold during the criminal case.

Man convicted in hospice scam

VENTURA - A former Chatsworth resident was convicted of grand theft, identity theft and other crimes in connection with his role in soliciting investments in an Simi Valley hospice, officials said Thursday.

Valentin Garcia Lopez Jr. pleaded guilty to 17 felonies related to the case, the Ventura County District Attorney's office said. Loped defrauded five investors our of more than $145,000, officials said.
