Ex-music teacher given prison term

A former music teacher was sentenced Monday to 21 years to life in prison for sexually abusing a young family member and physically abusing another.

City panel to meet soon in Sun Valley

The Los Angeles Board of Public Works will hold its Wednesday meeting in Sun Valley as part of its effort to make government more accessible.

Danza to present two scholarships

Actor Tony Danza will present two scholarships totaling $6,000 to two Taft High School students at the school's senior awards ceremony Wednesday.

This is the 13th anniversary of the scholarship program, founded by Suzanne Lewis in memory of Lamoun Thames, a 15-year-old Taft student who was killed at Ventura Boulevard and Winnetka Avenue in 1992.

Vandals hit site of Wal-Mart store

PALMDALE - Vandals damaged construction equipment and painted slogans against Wal-Mart and capitalism at the company's Supercenter under construction in west Palmdale.

The weekend vandalism caused damage estimated by sheriff's deputies at more than $88,000, but a Wal-Mart spokeswoman said the damage won't delay the store's planned opening in late August.
