Lockyer lawsuit can go forward

Grocery chains were not exempt from antitrust laws antitrust laws n. acts adopted by Congress to outlaw or restrict business practices considered to be monopolistic or which restrain interstate commerce. The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 declared illegal "every contract, combination....  when they entered into a profit-sharing pact during the Southland supermarket strike, a federal judge ruled Wednesday.

The finding comes in response to a lawsuit filed over the pact by California Attorney Bill Lockyer William Westwood "Bill" Lockyer (born May 8, 1941) is the current State Treasurer of California. Prior to this, he served as California's Attorney General and head of the Department of Justice for the U.S. state of California. , who called the ruling a victory for consumers.

Although the ruling does not make a finding that the grocers violated the antitrust laws, it does allow Lockyer's lawsuit to proceed.

Council hikes tax for airport parking

BURBANK - The Burbank City Council has voted to increase the parking tax at the Bob Hope Airport Bob Hope Airport (IATA: BUR, ICAO: KBUR, FAA LID: BUR) is a regional and national airport located in Burbank, California, United States.

It was formerly known as United Airport (1930-1934); Union Air Terminal (1934-1940);
 from 11 percent to 12 percent.

Airport spokesman Victor Gill said the airport has not decided whether to pass the increase on to customers.

The airport charges a daily maximum of $7 for its economy-lot parking, which includes the city's tax of 77 cents.

The increase, effective July 1, also will apply to the private lots near the airport that charge for parking.

L.A. Zoo sued by animal activists

Animal rights activists who claim elephants are mistreated at the Los Angeles Zoo The Los Angeles Zoo founded in 1966, is a large zoo located in Los Angeles, California, USA.

The Zoo, located in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, is home to 1,200 animals from around the world.
 filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday alleging the zoo violated their rights by barring them from protesting near zoo visitors.

Zoo officials were not immediately available to comment on the suit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles by activist Catherine Doyle and Mill Valley-based In Defense of Animals In Defense of Animals (IDA) is an animal welfare organisation based in San Rafael, California, USA. Its slogan is "working to protect the rights, welfare, and habitats of animals". .

The plaintiffs claim the elephant exhibit is inadequate, and say the city-run zoo has denied them the right to voice their opinions in an area where zoo-goers will hear them.

A Granada Hills man is the recipient of the top honor bestowed by the California Retired Teachers Association for his years of volunteer service to the community, it was announced Wednesday.

Dale Hines' ``untiring efforts on behalf of his local community are an exemplar of the spirit CRTA fosters throughout California,'' incoming CRTA President George Avak said of the Ruth Q. dePrida Award winner.

Hines, a retired teacher with 29 years of service in the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population. , was cited for his involvement in supporting the Van Nuys Optimists Club, his service as president of the Friends of Granada Hills Library, and his work on the committee that established the Granada Hills Community Council.

Los Angeles high school Los Angeles High School, founded in 1873, is the oldest public high school in the Southern California Region and in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Its colors are blue and white and the teams are called the Romans.  students interested in careers in entertainment can audition Sunday for a Diversity Acting Scholarship offered by NBC Universal and Improv Olympic.

As many as 12 students will be selected for the scholarship, which covers a six-week training course in acting and improvisation tailored for students with diverse backgrounds.

Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Leslie Dunn imposed the sentence on Werner Carpenter, who lost his bid to withdraw his November 2004 plea, said Deputy District Attorney Ann Marie Wise.

Carpenter, also known as Henry Carpenter, was arrested in January 2004 by Los Angeles police detectives in connection with two ``drug-induced sexual assaults.''
