Valley man jailed in burglary probe

A 30-year-old Van Nuys man remained in custody Monday on burglary charges in connection with what police said may be a professional ring of thieves posing as repairmen and targeting the elderly.

Steve Mendez was arrested last Wednesday and charged with the burglary of an elderly Eagle Rock couple, said Los Angeles Police Department "LAPD" and "L.A.P.D." redirect here. For other uses, see LAPD (disambiguation).

The city Ethics Commission on Monday accused the Los Angeles Police Protective League and several of its board members of violating campaign laws in the 2001 primary election.

Big cats get home; owners face court

MOORPARK - More than a dozen lynxes and bobcats removed from a Ventura County ranch have been relocated to a sanctuary in Nevada, state wildlife officials said Monday.

The 17 cats belong to Gert and Roena Hedengran, who are scheduled to appear in court April 18 on federal charges of lying to authorities when they denied owning an escaped 350-pound Siberian tiger shot and killed in February as it wandered the hills between Simi Valley and Camarillo.
