A portion of the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Police Department's Wilshire station was evacuated for more than two hours Friday after someone brought in a movie prop that looked like a real hand grenade, authorities said.

The object, along with some ammunition, was taken to the station at 4861 W. Venice Blvd. about 9:30 a.m. by someone who wanted to turn in the items to police, said LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

 Officer Grace Brady of the Media Relations office. Authorities summoned a bomb squad to the scene and evacuated the east side of the facility, Brady said.

Shortly after noon, the explosives experts determined that the object was a movie prop and not a live grenade, and the evacuation was called off, Brady said.

'Baywatch's' Paul is facing charges

BURBANK - Misdemeanor charges were filed Friday against two actresses, including former ``Baywatch'' cast member Alexandra Paul, in connection with a March 14 protest at a General Motors plant in Burbank, police said.

Paul, 41, and fellow actress Colette Divine, 34, are charged with resisting, obstructing or delaying an officer, according to Burbank police Sgt. Jay Jette.

The two were arrested as part of a protest over the automaker's decision to destroy several electric vehicles.

They parked a vehicle across the sidewalk of the General Motors Training Center during the protest, and officers tried unsuccessfully for more than an hour to persuade them to move the car, according to Jette.

The vehicle was eventually unlocked, and Paul and Divine were taken into custody without incident, according to police.

LACCD LACCD Los Angeles Community College District  gets deal on Prop. A bonds

The Los Angeles Community College District The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the community college district serving Los Angeles, California and some of its neighboring cities. In addition to typical college aged students, the LACCD also serves adults of all ages.  has refinanced the bonds issued under the $1.25 billion Proposition A construction program, saving $13.3 million in interest, officials said Friday.

The interest on the 25-year bonds has been reduced from 5.14 percent to 4.35 percent, officials said. The refinancing will enable $12 million to be redirected back into the bond program.

Voters approved Proposition A in 2001, and the $980 million Proposition AA in 2003. The district is using the money to renovate buildings and add new classrooms, laboratories and libraries to its nine campuses.

Suspect is jailed in rape attempt

BURBANK - A 22-year-old man was in jail Friday on suspicion of attempted rape after a 37-year-old Burbank woman who was out jogging fought off an attacker, police said.

Rene Leonel Arevalo of North Hollywood was arrested and is suspected of attacking the woman from behind and forcing her to the ground, said Sgt. Jay Jette of the Burbank Police Department The Burbank Police Department is the police department serving Burbank, California.

The attack occurred in a residential area near Bel Aire Drive and Uclan Drive at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, Jette said. The woman fought off her attacker and contacted police, who found the suspect with the help of a police dog, the sergeant said.

Arevalo is being held on $100,000 bail. Anyone who may have had contact with the suspect was asked to call Burbank police at (818) 238-3263.

Groundbreaking set for memorial

VENTURA - A ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday to break ground on the Ventura County Fallen Firefighters Memorial at the Ventura County Government Center, 800 S. Victoria Ave.

The memorial will recognize firefighters within the county who have died protecting citizens of Ventura County.

The names of the dead firefighters will be placed on the pedestal of a bronze statue of a firefighter holding a child.

Police arrest man in child molesting

SIMI VALLEY - A 35-year-old man was being held Friday on $1 million bail on suspicion of molesting a 13-year-old girl over a two-year period, police said.

Dennis Goms was arrested about 2:40 p.m. Thursday after a brief chase on the Ronald Reagan Freeway and booked into the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of child molestation Child molestation is a crime involving a range of indecent or sexual activities between an adult and a child, usually under the age of 14. In psychiatric terms, these acts are sometimes known as pedophilia. .

Girl rides tricycle into home's pool

PACOIMA - A 4-year-old girl was in ``very critical'' condition Friday after she rode her tricycle into an unfenced backyard swimming pool in Pacoima, said Jim Wells of the Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. AGOURA - Sheriff's crews were searching Friday night for two teenage boys who got lost hiking in the Cheeseboro Canyon area after the boys called for help about 7 p.m. from a cell phone, officials said.
