Board clears cops in fatal shooting

BURBANK - A Burbank police sergeant and a detective acted within department policy when they fatally shot a 25-year-old Israeli man last year after he hit the detective with his car, the department's shooting review board has found.

Fernando Award dinner set Friday

The Fernando Award Foundation will present the 46th annual Special Recognition Dinner on Friday, honoring Karl L. Boeckmann as the recipient of the 2004 Fernando Award.

A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the dinner at 7:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Universal Hotel's Grand Ballroom, 333 Universal Hollywood Drive, Universal City.

The Fernando Award is the highest award for volunteerism in the San Fernando Valley. Boeckmann has volunteered in the community for many years, participating in the Juvenile Justice Connection Project; Goodwill Industries; New Directions for Youth; as a Fernando board member; Childhelp USA and many others.

Suspicious blaze damages dwelling

WEST HILLS - A suspicious fire damaged a single-family house Wednesday, but no one was hurt, authorities said.

Thirty firefighters sent to the 24000 block of Jensen Drive, near Valley Circle Boulevard, at 6:15 a.m. doused the flames in the two-story home in about 20 minutes, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is the agency that provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Los Angeles. .

The fire apparently began in the kitchen, and the cause was deemed suspicious, Humphrey said.

Burbank council OKs police raise

BURBANK - The Burbank City Council has unanimously approved a one-year contract with the city's police union giving officers a 3.75 percent raise.

The one-year contract was approved Tuesday by the City Council, after members of the Burbank Police Officers Association approved it in a ratification vote.

Man enters plea in three slayings

A man accused of killing his parents and his ex-girlfriend after being released early from jail pleaded not guilty Wednesday to three counts of murder and other charges.

Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Dennis E. Mulcahy ordered Joshua Vick, 23, to be held without bail pending a hearing March 14 to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.

Vick is charged with murder in the Jan. 14 shooting deaths of his parents, Mary, 52, and Gable, 54, and the Jan. 15 slaying of his ex-girlfriend, Tesha Collins, a 29-year-old mother of four who had a child with the defendant.
