Red Cross holding benefit run/walk

PALMDALE - The American Red Cross-Antelope Valley Chapter will hold a 5K walk/run at 9 a.m. Saturday at Pelona Vista Park, 37700 Tierra Subida Road.

Awards will be given for the top three male and female finishers in the age categories of: 12 and under, 13-15, 16-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 59-59, and 60 and up.

Pre-registration is $15. Registration the day of the event is $18.

Pair sentenced for identity theft

LANCASTER - A Lancaster ex-convict was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison and his girlfriend to five years after they admitted to identity theft and other charges, officials said.

Christopher Trout, 44, who lived at a Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. In his car, deputies said they found methamphetamine and paperwork associated with identity theft. At his motel room, they found Vanveen making counterfeit identification on her computer.

Vanveen was already wanted on an arrest warrant on suspicion of forgery and was on probation for theft, deputies said.

Deputies seized computers, forged checks, stolen mail and identification cards in the names of at least 10 different people, a sheriff's statement said.

Trout must serve at least 80 percent of his 15-year, four-month sentence because of his prior record, Evans said. Vanveen is eligible for parole after half her sentence if she works and exhibits good behavior Orderly and lawful action; conduct that is deemed proper for a peaceful and law-abiding individual.

Ex-convict found with pirated discs

LANCASTER - A Lancaster ex-convict arrested 14 months ago with more than 1,800 pirated DVDs and CDs was arrested again after deputies stopped his vehicle for speeding and found marijuana and more than 300 DVDs and CDs.

The deputies, who recognized Cary Calvin, 42, from his December 2003 arrest, also arrested his female companion, then went to his home and arrested his landlord for being an ex-convict with a loaded firearm firearm, device consisting essentially of a straight tube to propel shot, shell, or bullets by the explosion of gunpowder. He had been on probation for an earlier DVD piracy conviction when he was arrested in December 2003.
