The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities. College of Education again is ranked in the top 10 in the nation in a magazine's annual assessment. The UO college was ranked sixth by U.S. News & World Report U.S. News & World Report Weekly newsmagazine published in Washington, D.C. U.S. News was founded in 1933 by David Lawrence (1888–1973) to cover important domestic events; he founded World Report in 1945 to treat world news. The two magazines were merged in 1948. , while its special education program was ranked third. With more than $25 million in annual funding from grants and contracts, the college's per-faculty-member funding of almost $500,000 put it in the top three in the nation as well. The UO School of Law has two programs that earned rankings. The environmental law program was placed third among public law schools and seventh overall; the dispute resolution program ranked fourth among public colleges and 13th overall.
