Ban on backyard burning extended until Nov. 1

The backyard burning ban has been extended until Nov. 1 amid continued dry weather.

The ban has traditionally ended in mid-October, but the Lane County Fire Defense Board has extended the ban throughout the county because of continued warm weather.

To check whether burning is allowed, call the recorded message at the Lane Regional Air Pollution Authority at 726-3976.

The League of Women Voters of Lane County is hosting five Russian visitors this week as part of the 2006 Russian Civic Hosting program.

The program introduces Russian leaders to U.S. democracy at every level of government and provides exposure to American life and culture.

"We are delighted to have this opportunity to host young Russian women, all leaders in their various cities, this week," said Flo Alvergue, the league's co-president.

"This exchange has been an enlightening experience for our members and for other citizens in our community."

Residents selected to get civic leadership awards

HARRISBURG - Six Harrisburg residents have been selected for 2006 civic leadership awards from the Junction City-Harrisburg Area Chamber of Commerce.

Kay Dittmar will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award; Beverly and Bill Roberts will receive Outstanding Citizen Awards; Carlita Stutzman will receive the Distinguished Service Award; Alex Allen is Educator of the Year; and Paul Johnson Paul Johnson may refer to:

UO art students to teach free painting classes

SPRINGFIELD - Free painting classes for city residents will be offered during the next two months in the Community Room at Splash! Lively Park Swim Center, 6100 Thurston Road.

The seven-session class will meet from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays through Nov. 28. The first class is set for Tuesday. No painting experience is necessary.

Register for the class by calling (541) 760-8135. There are 15 spots available.

Classes will be taught by University of Oregon art students.

The October meeting of the Six Sensory Eugene group - which helps people explore their psychic nature - will be held Monday.
