KLAMATH FALLS - The National Sheepdog Finals are returning to the Klamath Basin this fall.

The five-day competition at the Kerr Ranch features 150 border collies from the United States and Canada.

``Nowhere else in North America will you have an opportunity to watch the best sheepdogs in the world compete,'' said Geri Byrne, a member of the Klamath Basin Stockdog Association that is hosting the nationals.

Byrne, owner of Border Collies in Action in Newell, was the coordinator for nationals held in the Klamath Basin in 1997 and 2001.

Manure-to-energy plan could become reality

RICKREALL - The cows at a Polk County Dairy may soon be offering up more than just milk.

There are plans that could make Rickreall Dairy a manure-to-energy provider. If it works, waste from 1,700 mature cows and 1,400 young stock will be converted to methane gas and used to fire electric power generators.

RealEnergy, a Yountville, Calif., company, is the dairy's partner in the $6 million project, expected to be financed with government loans and energy-tax credits.

``I think we're over the hurdles,'' said Charlie Smither of RealEnergy's acquisitions and development department. If the project is finalized, work could start in September.

Oregon Department of Energy officials say Rickereall could generate about 6 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year, enough to light about 500 homes. Pacific Power would purchase the electricity.

Other plans call for possibly processing the methane with a ``scrubber'' and selling it to a natural-gas utility.
