Panel to honor DeFazio for scholarship gifts

U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio Peter Anthony DeFazio (born May 27, 1947) is an American politician. He serves as a Democratic U.S. Representative from Oregon, representing the 4th Congressional District and is currently serving his 11th term.  will be honored at a state Capitol ceremony Monday as the "Scholarship Donor of the Year" for 2003.

The award is given by by the Oregon Student Assistance Commission The Oregon Student Assistance Commission (OSAC), established by the Oregon Legislature in 1959, is primarily charged with administering student financial aid programs, and through its Office of Degree Authorization, authorizing and regulating the granting of degrees by institutions . DeFazio is being recognized for his personal contributions, totaling more than $151,000, to 127 Oregonians.

DeFazio will receive the 13th annual award at 10:30 a.m. in the governor's ceremonial office.

DeFazio, a Democrat from Springfield, has represented Oregon's 4th Congressional District Oregon's 4th congressional district is a United States Congressional District that represents the southern half of Oregon's coastal counties, including Coos, Curry, Douglas, Lane, and Linn counties and most of Benton and Josephine counties.  since 1986.

State plans meeting

on gifted education

The state Department of Education will hold a public meeting in Eugene on Monday to gather input on talented and gifted Talented and Gifted or Gifted and Talented may refer to:
  • Intellectual giftedness, an intellectual ability significantly higher than average
  • National Association for Gifted Children, a UK organization
 education programs.

The meeting, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lane Education Service District office at 1200 Highway 99N, is designed for parents, students, teachers, curriculum directors, administrators, specialists and advocates. In an effort to assess and improve TAG education programs in tight fiscal times, the department has held a series of such meetings around the state.

Participants will be given five minutes to speak.

A video conferencing system will connect the audience and moderators with state education officials in Salem.

A report summarizing the public feedback on TAG education will be posted on the department's Web site (www.ode.state.or.us) on May 1.
