Construction company co-owner dies in accident

ROSEBURG - The co-owner of a construction company died last weekend while operating a rock crusher, family members said.

Ronald S. ``Rollie'' Weekly, 45, co-owner of Weekly Brothers Construction Inc. with his brothers, was using a bar to pry rocks loose from the crusher when the accident happened, said his brother, Todd Weekly.

The bar may have flown out and hit Weekly in the neck, Todd Weekly said.

The brothers were grinding the rocks for a PacifiCorp hydroelectric project on the North Umpqua River, said Dave Kvamme, spokesman for the Portland-based utility.

``He loved his job. He loved to work,'' Todd Weekly said of his brother. ``He just liked the type of work we did ... working out in the forest like we did most of the time.''

Educational leader throws hat in ring for House race

COOS BAY - Susan Massey, former chair of the Oregon State Board of Education, announced her candidacy on Monday for the Oregon House of Representatives.

Massey, a longtime resident of North Bend, is seeking the Republican nomination in District 9, a seat currently held by Joanne Verger, a Democrat. Verger has announced her candidacy for Ken Messerle's seat in the state Senate. Messerle won't be seeking re-election to that position.

Massey is a member of the state's "Quality Education Commission."

She is also on the board of directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Oregon, a fellow of the American Leadership Forum and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of North Bend.

"Oregon and the South Coast face major challenges and I want to participate in finding solutions," Massey said.

Massey, a former elementary school teacher, graduated from Redmond High School in Central Oregon and the University of Oregon, moving to North Bend in 1973. She was a member of the North Bend School Board from 1979 to 1991.

Election to decide fate of five on Coquille council

Coquille voters will decide on a special recall election next month, with ballots mailed out in one week.

Up for recall are five council members: Kathy Hagen, Mollie Anderson, E.N. "Corky" Daniels, Fran Capehart and Loren Wiese.

Ambulance district gives away three defibrillators

The Western Lane Ambulance District has donated three automatic external defibrillators to the Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue and Florence police departments as part of a goal to have the devices in all public places and emergency vehicles.

In a cardiac arrest, patients have only several minutes to be aided by a defibrillator.

Red Cross schedules class for would-be volunteers

The local chapter of the American Red Cross is holding a free class for residents interested in becoming Red Cross disaster volunteers.

The class will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the chapter headquarters, 862 Bethel Drive.

This is the first of five required courses to become a Red Cross Disaster Action Team member. These volunteers respond to disasters locally and across the country.

This course provides basic information about the effects of disasters, outlines the role of agencies in disaster relief and introduces participants to American Red Cross disaster services.
