Rights activist to recall travels in Jim Crow era

 who spent part of his youth in the South laying the groundwork for the civil rights movement will speak of that experience today at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities. . Orval Etter, an attorney and professor emeritus at the UO, will speak at noon in the Metolious Room at the Erb Memorial Union on "Precursors to the Montgomery Bus Boycott The Montgomery bus boycott was a mass protest by African American citizens in the city of Montgomery, Alabama, against Segregation policies on the city's public buses. It was nine years before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 would change the nation forever. ."

Etter's memories of that time of civil rights ferment are based on his travels through the Jim Crow South between 1946 and 1950. The focus of the free talk will be on constitutional developments that led to the boycott and its impact on the freedom movement.

Etter taught a course, "Violence-Nonviolence," at the university from 1968 to 1988, and today chairs on campus a weekly public program, The Pacifica Forum. He was regional secretary of the Fellowship of Reconciliation The Fellowship of Reconciliation (FoR or FOR) is the name used by a number of religious nonviolent organizations, particularly in English-speaking countries. They are linked together by affiliation to the International Fellowship of Reconciliation (IFOR).  from 1946 to 1957.

Tax increase measure subject of forum

SPRINGFIELD - A state legislative revenue officer will hold a forum on Measure 30 at 10 a.m. Saturday in the City Council Chambers, City Hall, 225 Fifth St.

Paul Warner will be joined by state Sen. Bill Morrisette, D-Springfield, and Reps. Phil Barnhart, D-Eugene, and Terry Beyer, D-Springfield.

Voters will decide Feb. 3 whether to approve Measure 30, a tax increase that, if rejected, would mean budget cuts of up to $800 million in the state's 2003-05 budget.

Warner will also hold a forum at 1 p.m. in the Kirk Room of the Brownsville Public Library. For more information, call 343-0892.

Peace group to launch voter registration drive A voter registration drive is an effort, often undertaken by a political campaign, political party, or other outside groups (partisan and non-partisan), that seeks to register to vote those who are eligible but not registered.  

Friendly Neighbors for Peace will hold a voter registration campaign kickoff and potluck on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Washington Park Community Center, 2025 Washington St., Eugene.

to honor King in Florence

FLORENCE - Local residents can celebrate Martin Luther King's birthday in a series of free events Saturday, sponsored by Citizens Democracy Watch.

The events begin with a march downtown at about 11:30 a.m. In the afternoon, there will be speeches by former National Public Radio and KLCC KLCC Kuala Lumpur City Centre (Malaysia)  broadcaster Alan Siporin and John Cuff, a black activist from Eugene. The event also features American Indian storytelling and a report on last summer's Freedom Ride for Immigrant Rights.

Music, food, arts and crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts.  will highlight the event.
