Nikolas Salerno of Monroe was swimming near the south end of the park with his 13-year-old brother about 5:20 p.m., when he began to struggle in the current, said Lt. Gail Newman of the Benton County Sheriff's Office. The younger brother tried to help pull his brother to safety with a stick, but Nikolas could not reach it and disappeared under the water, she said. The brother then ran to his parents, Peter and Trudy Salerno, who called 911. Dive teams, a helicopter and emergency crews from Harrisburg, Linn County, Benton County and Corvallis assisted in the search, but were unable to locate Nikolas before nightfall. He was found at 10:25 a.m. Saturday in 12 feet of water about 25 feet from the shore and 100 feet downstream from where he was last seen. Also on Saturday, the body of Zacharey Harle was recovered from the river. Harle, 16, of Salem, was reported missing Tuesday while swimming in the Willamette during a church outing at Wallace Marine Park, according to Polk County sheriff's deputies. |
