Police lock down Hilton, Hult after bomb threat

Eugene police locked down the Hult Center and the Hilton Eugene and closed adjacent streets Saturday morning after a man threatened that he had planted a bomb in the area.

Hult Center security called police at 8:48 a.m. after hearing reports that a man, who may have been suffering from mental illness, was muttering to passers-by that he had a bomb, Sgt. Eric Clinko said.

Police notified guests of the Hilton, cordoned off West Seventh Avenue and all but one lane of West Sixth Avenue. A Federal Protective Service bomb detection K-9 checked the area, he said, but no bomb was found. All lanes were reopened by 9:45 a.m.

The 46-year-old man was arrested and held for disorderly conduct.

Police arrest two teens suspected of tagging

Two middle school students were arrested early Friday for allegedly spray painting their school and a nearby house, Eugene police said.

Police were called to the 3900 block of Marshall Avenue at 12:49 a.m., where witnesses reported two juveniles on skateboards had tagged the side of a house. Using their descriptions, police said they found two teens walking with skateboards through the Cascade Middle School grounds.

The graffiti was consistent with individuals affiliated or wanting to be affiliated with a gang, police said.

A 13-year-old was arrested for criminal mischief. A 14-year-old was arrested for criminal mischief, unlawful application of graffiti and unlawful possession of graffiti tools. The school principal identified both as students of the school.

Police seek witnesses

to fatal highway crash

Police are seeking the public's help with an investigation of a fatal traffic accident at 1:24 p.m. Saturday four miles east of Waldport on Highway 34.

Viktor Maleyev, 22, of Milwaukie died when he lost control while trying to pass other vehicles and was hit by a pickup truck in the oncoming lane, according to an Oregon State Police news release.

Maleyev, driving a 1993 red Honda Accord westbound on Highway 34, was traveling behind two blue and white Acuras. All three cars were attempting to pass two other vehicles, but Maleyev couldn't complete the pass and lost control when he tried to pull back into the westbound lane.

The Honda slid into the eastbound lane where a Nissan pickup slammed into its passenger side. Maleyev, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

The Nissan driver, Roger Clausel, 54, of Waldport was treated and released from Pacific Communities Hospital.

Oregon State police ask any witnesses who may have seen the Honda or the Acuras to contact Trooper Greg Plummer at (541) 265-5354 ext. 309.
