BRIEFLY.Byline: The Register-Guard Baby in critical condition after emergency delivery SPRINGFIELD - Emergency personnel rushed a newborn baby and the mother to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene Friday evening after a difficult emergency birth at a Springfield home. The baby was in critical condition upon arrival at the hospital, said Mark Walker, operations chief with the Springfield Fire Department. A fire engine and ambulance crew responded at 8 p.m. to a report of a "difficult childbirth," Walker said. The home is in east Springfield. "There were some (birth) complications," Walker said, and safety personnel provided "advanced life support level of care." A hospital official would not provide information on the condition of the patients. Fire in well system damages house, garage MARCOLA - A fire caused by an apparent malfunction of a switch controlling a well pump destroyed a garage and damaged a house at 91958 Marcola Road around 10:30 a.m. Friday. No one was injured. Damage was estimated at $80,000, Mohawk Valley Fire Chief Dennis Shew said. The homeowner, Michael Foxx, reported he'd had trouble with the well system recently. He was checking on repairs Friday when the fire broke out, Shew said. Firefighters protected the house, which is attached to the garage, but some damage occurred when the fire spread to the attic. The family has insurance. The local chapter of the American Red Cross was at the scene to help them, Shew noted. McKenzie Fire and Rescue provided backup for the Mohawk firefighters. Club bouncers cleared of assault charges Assault charges will not be filed against two nightclub bouncers who were arrested May 26 after witnesses reported they had beaten a handcuffed man in front of Rock N Rodeo, 44 E. Seventh Ave., in Eugene. The incident happened two days before Michael Guggenmos, 28, and Jonathan Skinner, 32, were arrested. The victim suffered cuts on his head, but refused medical care. Chief Deputy Lane County District Attorney Alex Gardner said the arrests were appropriate, but proving a case was not possible because witness accounts conflicted and a video recording of the incident was inconclusive. "It was immediately clear that the alleged victim was the initial aggressor," Gardner said. "We could not establish that the bouncers used more force than necessary." - From Register-Guard and news service reports |
