BRIEFLY.Byline: The Register-Guard Symphony to perform despite two deaths The Eugene Symphony's performance with flutists Sir James and Lady Jeanne Galway will go on as scheduled at 8 p.m. Thursday despite the death of two of the orchestra's principal musicians in a weekend car crash. `Going forward with Thursday's performance is the right thing to do,' board President Mary Ann Hanson said. `Music will speak to us through our grief and provide the solace we all need at this time.' Principal violist Kjersten Oquist and principal second violinist Angela Svendsen were killed Sunday night on Interstate 5 near Albany when their car was struck by a wrong-way driver as they drove home from a rehearsal. Principal oboist Kelli M. Gronli was slightly injured in the crash; she is not expected to perform Thursday. Variation No. 9 from Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations will be added to Thursday's program in honor of Oquist and Svendsen. Today's free concert preview at noon at the Hult Center also will go ahead as planned. Schools calling for updated immunizations Parents have one week to provide immunization records to their children's schools or risk having their kids sent home. Children won't be able to attend school after Feb. 20 if their school or child care records show they are missing immunizations and do not have an appropriate medical or religious exemption. The immunization requirement is a state law that applies to all public and private schools, pre-schools, Head Start and certified child care facilities. Last year, local health departments sent 30,296 letters to parents informing them their child needed immunizations to stay in school. A total of 5,301 children were kept out of school or child care until their records were up to date. Many children get letters because their school or day care records are not updated, even though they may have all of their shots. Parents seeking immunizations for their children should contact their health care provider, county health clinic or call Oregon SafeNet at 800-SAFENET or (800) 723-3638. REGION Cycle Oregon to include Cottage Grove in '07 tour The 2007 Cycle Oregon tour announced its route Tuesday night, and come late summer, approximately 2,000 cyclists will descend upon Cottage Grove. Cycle Oregon, a weeklong mass movement of cyclists touring through a region of the state from Sept. 8-15, will travel from Sisters to Crater Lake before heading to Dorena Lake and bedding down in Cottage Grove. Riders will then move on to Oakridge before crossing the Cascades and ending back in Sisters. Two-thousand cyclists passing through a town provides a great economic boost to small towns, said Lisa Lawton of the Lane County Visitors Association. Cycle Oregon rotates through different areas of the state each year. For more information, visit www.cycleoregon.com. - From Register-Guard and news service reports |
