Police seek information on Eugene bank robber

Cause of house fire eludes investigators

Fire investigators had not determined the cause of a blaze that did about $350,000 in damage to a Eugene house this week and left three families homeless.

Members of the Eugene fire marshal's office worked among the ruins of the house at 1638 Jefferson St. overnight Thursday and for much of Friday without finding a cause.

Neighbors heard a pop and people yelling when the fire broke out before 5 p.m. Thursday at the back of the house. Everyone escaped the house, which had been converted into apartments.

The fire was under control just after 7 p.m.

The McKenzie River is a tributary of the Willamette River, 86 miles (138 km) long, in northwestern Oregon in the United States. It drains part of the Cascade Range east of Eugene into the southernmost end of the Willamette Valley.
 Ranger District, and accesses the Three Sisters Wilderness The Three Sisters Wilderness is a wilderness area in the Willamette National Forest in Oregon, east of Eugene and southeast of Portland. It consists of 242,000 acres (979 km²) along the crest of the Cascades, and ranges in elevation from 2,000 to 10,358 feet (600 to 3157 m). . It is in the Foley Ridge Trail Area, south of Highway 242.

A log that is part of the bridge cracked, leaving hikers without a way to cross the bridge, and Horse Creek is not safe to cross on foot, said Steve Otoupalik, Wilderness and Trails manager for the district.

In addition, a tree that is more than 40 inches in diameter has fallen across the trail near the bridge, blocking access for livestock.

Later this season, trail workers hope to re-route the trail around the fallen tree, to allow hunting access for equestrians willing to ford the creek on horseback on the back of a horse; mounted or riding on a horse or horses; in the saddle.
