Fatal house fire leaves animals homeless

Lane County Animal Regulation Authority is looking for homes for the many animals left ownerless in the wake of a fatal house fire in Marcola on Tuesday.

Pamela Devereaux, the home's occupant, was killed and has no known relatives, the county said.

A male border-collie-type dog, named Speckles, about 7 years old; an adult goat; about eight rabbits; 12 geese and 20 chickens were left homeless.

"We're making a plea for adoptive owners," said Mike Wellington, authority manager. "These pets deserve good homes and we hope families who want pets will consider them."

There is one stipulation: If a relative of Devereaux's is found and requests the animals, they must be given to that person, Wellington said.

Police seek transient in groping incident at hotel

Police have identified a Eugene transient as a suspect in the groping of a 14-year-old girl in a hotel room.

Eugene police detectives are looking for Michael Allen Eastman, 20, who is known to frequent the Alton Baker Park area.

Police said physical evidence found at La Quinta Inn, 155 Day Island Road, may link him to the crime.

Shortly before 4:15 a.m. Monday, a man entered a room at the hotel through a ground-floor window.

Once inside, he stole cash from a wallet and touched the girl as she slept.

An adult in the next room heard the girl scream and saw the man climb out the window and run away.

Police asked anyone with information regarding Eastman's whereabouts to contact Detective Jeff Roth at 682-5569.
