to keep talks going

Triad Hospitals Triad Hospitals is a Fortune 500 company based in Plano, Texas. It operates 54 hospitals in the United States. In February 2007 it received a merger/buyout offer from another company, and then in March 2007 it received a superior merger/buyout offer from Community Health Systems of  Inc. and the Eugene Water & Electric Board on Friday signed an agreement to continue negotiations over a possible sale of the utility's downtown campus.

The accord is not a contract to sell Triad the 22.5 acres of EWEB property the Texas-based hospital chain wants to buy in order to build a five-story McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center on the site, according to according to

"It's an agreement that outlines a process for continuing negotiations," said EWEB spokesman Lance Robertson Lance Robertson is an American musician,disc jockey, and actor. Originally from St. Louis, MO, Lance relocated to Los Angeles. Lance became well known in the LA indie rock scene from his band, The Raymakers and while working his day job at Amoeba Records. . "This (agreement) gives us the unilateral right to end negotiations at any time."

Triad officials have been trying to convince EWEB to sign a more formal contract, but utility officials have refused pending results of a cost-analysis study due in September.

Triad spokeswoman Rosie Pryor said the agreement would allow the hospital to begin the certificate of need process in late spring or early summer.

science, teaching honors

The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  professors are being honored today as the best in the state in science and teaching.

Ewart Baldwin, emeritus professor of geology, will receive the Outstanding Scientist Award, while physics professor Richard Taylor Richard Taylor is the name of:
  • Richard Taylor (general) (1826–1879), Confederate general in the American Civil War
  • Richard Taylor (philosopher) (1919–2003), American metaphysician
 will receive the Outstanding Teacher in Higher Education Award. Both honors are given by the Oregon Academy of Science.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony today at the state association's annual meeting at Oregon State University Oregon State University, at Corvallis; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1858 as Corvallis College, opened 1865. In 1868 it was designated Oregon's land-grant agricultural college and was taken over completely by the state in 1885.  in Corvallis.

Baldwin is now in his 58th year at the UO and is considered the foremost authority on Oregon geology. He is the author of the widely used textbook "Geology of Oregon."

Taylor is known for his work on the geometric patterns known as fractals. He discovered fractal patterns in the work of artist Jackson Pollock and has done work showing that certain fractal patterns found in nature have the ability to lower stress in people.
