Police update details

on suspect vehicle

The Eugene police major collision investigation team released an updated description of a sport utility vehicle involved in a hit-and-run last week that sent a well-known amateur musician and university professor to the hospital.

Orval Etter, 89, was walking across 30th Avenue at University Street about 3 p.m. Thursday when a vehicle headed west on 30th struck him. Witnesses say the driver stopped a short distance away, paused for a few seconds and drove away.

ROSEBURG - The body of a Marine killed in Iraq is being returned to Roseburg for burial.

 and Gov. Ted Kulongoski's office was helping arrange transport to Roseburg, the town where Moore was raised and where he will be buried.

Local officials had been asked to provide a hearse to bring the body back to Roseburg but Moore's family asked that he be flown home, the News-Review newspaper in Roseburg reported.

``We felt that if the military took James from Roseburg, they should bring him back to Roseburg,'' his sister, Melissa Andrews, told the newspaper.

Moore was killed Wednesday along with 29 other Marines and a sailor, after the helicopter they were riding in crashed in western Iraq.

His memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, the day Moore would have turned 25.

SALEM - State Rep. Dan Doyle resigned from the Legislature on Monday, but his departure doesn't end a state inquiry into whether he committed crimes in his handling of campaign finances.

Elks lodges offering

vocational student aid

The Oregon State Elks Association and 57 lodges throughout the state are offering grants for vocational education vocational education, training designed to advance individuals' general proficiency, especially in relation to their present or future occupations. The term does not normally include training for the professions. .

All state residents are eligible for the grants. Applicants must be planning to attend a vocational/technical program culminating in an associate degree, diploma or certificate.

The grants are for $1,000 a year, renewable for a second year. Applications are available at high schools, community colleges and at any of the 57 Elks lodges in Oregon. Deadline for applications is April 1.
