by replacing stolen cash

SPRINGFIELD - The money's rolling in at the OK Tavern, where a thief stole $500 in donations intended for a single mom diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

Since news of the theft hit the paper, people have made more than $3,000 in contributions, with more dollars promised in the future, bar owner Marcia Kivela said Wednesday. "I'm getting calls from New York, South Carolina, the state of Washington, Portland - it's the power of the press," she said.

Someone broke into the bar at 28th and Main streets early Monday and made off with the cash kept in an aquarium inside the bar. The money was meant for 24-year-old Ashleigh Hall, who was raised in the Eugene-Springfield area and now lives in Boise. The thief also took Toys for Tots donations, and some of the newly dedicated money will go to that charity, too, Kivela said.

Human rights award nominations encouraged

As part of the annual celebration for International Human Rights Day, Eugene residents are invited to nominate people who, in their work or personal lives, represent human rights principles.

To submit a nomination, call Eugene's Human Rights office, 682-5177, by 5 p.m. Monday. Provide the person's name, address, telephone number, e-mail address and why they should be honored as a "Hometown Hero." Children and youth are encouraged to submit nominations, especially of people who may not be well-known, such as parents or teachers.

People selected for the award will be recognized on Dec. 11, at a celebration of the 56th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The event, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., will be at Lane Community College, Building 19.
