Cheney's visit cost $12,700 in police pay

Vice President Dick Cheney's trip to Eugene Friday cost the city's police department an estimated $12,700 in regular and overtime pay.

It also netted one citation for a demonstrator. Perry Saunders Patterson of Eugene was cited for second-degree criminal trespass after police responded to a complaint that her yelling from the back of the crowd had interrupted the vice president's speech at the Monaco Coach hangar at Eugene Airport, said police spokeswoman Kerry Delf.

According to the police report, Patterson was escorted outside the building and told she would not be cited if she agreed to leave the premises, Delf said. Patterson refused and was issued the citation. A mandatory court date for the citation was set for Oct. 1 for Patterson, 54. She faces a fine of up to $250. Patterson does not have a listing in the phone book and could not be reached for comment.

Delf said the dignitary protection detail cost the city an estimated $5,200 in regular pay to officers who were on duty at the time of Cheney's appearance and $7,500 in overtime for officers called to work on their off hours.

Woman killed in fall

from truck on highway

VENETA - A woman died at about 6:45 p.m. Monday when she fell out of the door of a westbound truck on Highway 126 west of Territorial Road.

The Oregon State Police said Teresa L. Rines, 40, of Florence was a passenger in a moving van driven by Orville A. Bales Jr., 56, out of the Florence area. Rines fell from and then was struck by the moving van. Sgt. Scott Miller said she died immediately.

Police said that Rines had taken off her seat belt while reaching for something in the cab of the truck when the door opened and she fell out the door.

Witnesses who were following the truck said it was traveling 50 to 55 mph, Miller said. There was no erratic driving and alcohol was not involved, he said.

No citations have been issued.

Woman dies from burns after dispute in home

ROSEBURG - A woman died after police said she was badly burned by her estranged husband during a dispute Monday night.

Roseburg police and firefighters were called at 6:20 p.m. for a fight and a fire. When police arrived, witnesses said Paul Fahey, 36, had been in a disturbance with Brenda M. Iverson-Fahey, 35, and then fled in an orange Dodge Neon.

Police found Iverson-Fahey badly burned inside the house. She was taken to Mercy Hospital where she soon died. A Douglas County sheriff's deputy spotted the Neon about 7:10 p.m. outside of Roseburg. After a pursuit, police say Fahey crashed into a fence, when he was arrested and taken to the hospital for serious burns.

Tillamook cheese maker

will appeal name ruling

The makers of Tillamook cheese have fired a new round in the battle of the brands, the company announced Monday.

The farmer-owned cooperative's board of directors voted unanimously to appeal a judge's August decision that the Tillamook Country Smoker has a right to use the name "Tillamook."

The smoker sued the cheese maker after the Tillamook County Creamery Association sent letters demanding that the jerky maker stop using "Tillamook."

The smoker fought back and won, though a judge did order the smoker to stop using the name Tillamook Jerky. But the creamery now argues that the ruling - which found that the creamery had waited decades too long to object - didn't consider all the evidence.
