 or riptide

Narrow, jetlike stream of water that flows sporadically seaward for several minutes, in a direction perpendicular to a beach. The term riptide is a misnomer because the currents are in no way related to tides.

A Springfield man drowned and his wife was left unconscious after an ocean rip current swept the couple into rough water as they were playing in the surf near a resort in Gold Beach on Saturday afternoon.

Daniel Wallace Taylor, an experienced scuba diver, and Nikki Taylor both were wearing wet suits when the accident happened around 3:50 p.m., said Paul Glovannetti, a spokesman for the Gold Beach Police Department.

Witnesses said the couple had been in the surf about 20 minutes before the rip current pulled them farther from the beach into rough water. Both were unconscious before witnesses could pull them ashore.

Gunman robs store, eludes police search

SPRINGFIELD - A man used a gun to rob a store that specializes in adult entertainment products early Tuesday.
