'Back to School Funk' winds up at Wetlands

By now, the college kids have had their first days of class and maybe gotten a little used to the idea summer is really over.

After Saturday, there will be one more ending to mourn: the conclusion of the brief "Back to School Funk" series at the Wetlands.

This week's lineup features the Essentials from Eugene and the Guy Tyler Band and Tony Smiley, both out of Portland.

Dubbed the "One Man Riot," Smiley opens the evening with his experimental rock music.

The Essentials is a nine-piece band featuring talented and experienced young musicians, each with a personal or professional attachment to the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  Music School. The band plays originals and covers Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire and Chicago.

As usual, the show starts at 10 p.m. for $3 cover. The Wetlands Brew Pub & Sports Bar is at 922 Garfield St.

Mississippi Allstars

stop again in Eugene

The North Mississippi Allstars North Mississippi Allstars is a blues-rock/jam band band from Hernando, Mississippi founded in 1996. The band is composed of brothers Luther Dickinson (guitar, vocals) and Cody Dickinson (drums, keyboards), and Chris Chew (electric bass guitar).  unwittingly may be helping to resurrect Eugene as a blues town.

The band has made several stops here, including gigs at the Eugene Celebration The Eugene Celebration is an annual community celebration and civic event held in downtown Eugene, Oregon, United States. Featuring bands and performers from throughout the Pacific Northwest, the three-day festival is held in early September and attracts more than 40,000 attendees , the WOW Hall and Taylor's.

On Wednesday, brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson, along with bassist Chris Chew, will bring their blues-infused rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll: see rock music.  to the McDonald Theatre.

Still a young band, these three have been the core of the Allstars since 1996. Their latest release is "Electric Blue Watermelon watermelon, plant (Citrullus vulgaris) of the family Curcurbitaceae (gourd family) native to Africa and introduced to America by Africans transported as slaves. Watermelons are now extensively cultivated in the United States and are popular also in S Russia. ," which came out last year and features guest appearances by Lucinda Williams, Robert Randolph, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band The Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a New Orleans, Louisiana, brass band. The ensemble was established in 1977 by Benny Jones together with members of the Tornado Brass Band. The Dirty Dozen revolutionized the New Orleans brass band style by incorporating funk and bebop into the  and rapper Al Kapone from the film "Hustle and Flow."

The McDonald Theatre is at 1010 Willamette. The show starts at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $17 in advance or $20 at the door.
