The inaugural Northwest Indigenous Film Festival, featuring work by local and international American Indians, opens Saturday at Lane Community College.

The festival will feature seven films on two days. Moviegoers also will have a chance to interact with filmmakers, actors and artists. It will be held in the Center for Meeting and Learning at LCC (Leadless Chip Carrier, Leaded Chip Carrier) See leadless chip carrier, CLCC and PLCC.

Four Northwest cities have been selected to premiere the event, with kickoff community celebrations in Eugene, Portland, Seattle and Spokane.

Here's the schedule:

Saturday: 1 p.m., "The Messenger," a Blackgum Production of an animated Cherokee story in the Cherokee language with English subtitles; 2 p.m., "The Beginning: They Told Cherokee," a creation story; 2:30 p.m., "The Ball Game, an animated film done by Sequoyah High Students; 3 p.m., "Salmon on the Backs of Buffaloes," which examines the 2002 fish kill on the Klamath River.

Sunday: 1 p.m., "Homeland," with a talk by Evon Peter and Gwich'in Chief from Alaska; 3:15 p.m., "The Salt Song Trail" and "Tattoo on My Heart," with a discussion with veterans of the Wounded Knee 1973 protest.
