BRIEFLY.Byline: The Register-Guard Gun pulled on street preacher; two detained Police detained two people Friday night after a street preacher said one of them pointed a gun at him in downtown Eugene. The situation was still evolving late Friday, so details were sketchy. The street preacher told police he approached a group of teens at the intersection of West Broadway and Charnelton Street about 9 p.m. and began preaching. One of the teens pointed a gun at the preacher and told him to leave, Sgt. Tom Eichorn said. The man fled to a nearby restaurant to call police. Officers approached a group of young people, and one of them ran, throwing a gun to the ground, Eichorn said. The officer chased him and called for backup. One of the other teens grabbed the gun and left, the sergeant said. Police found him at the downtown Lane Transit District station. They also detained the first teen. Officers were still searching for the gun an hour later. Man, 66, sentenced in child porn case A 66-year-old Junction City man was sentenced Thursday to almost six years in prison for possessing and distributing what the prosecutor described as "the worst child porn I've seen." A tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children led to a search warrant at the residence of Ronald Cavin that turned up 40,000 images and videos of pornography involving children "from infants on up," Deputy Lane County District Attorney Erik Hasselman said. The national center electronically tracks the distribution network of child pornography, and Cavin's computer was identified as the source of some that was sent over the Internet, he said. In a plea deal, Cavin pleaded guilty to 10 counts of first-degree encouraging child sex abuse, because he distributed porn, and to 20 counts of second-degree encouraging child sex abuse, for possessing it. He was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison, according to court records. |
