Man charged in raiding of Dairy Queen fridge

Police arrested a man they found hiding inside a fast food restaurant's walk-in freezer with a backpack full of food early Tuesday.

A burglar alarm sounded shortly before 1:30 a.m. at the Dairy Queen at 734 Highway 99. Eugene police were sent to the restaurant after a private security officer noticed an open drive-up window and heard noises inside the restaurant.

Officers entered through the open window and noticed packets of cheese, hot dogs and chocolate chips scattered all over the floor. They found the man inside the freezer and discovered the backpack with four packages of American cheese, 10 packages of hot dogs, 10 Dilly bars, and bags of chocolate chips and brownie bits inside.

Police arrested Curt Dexter Bowman, 31, of Eugene, who was arraigned later that day in Lane County Circuit Court on charges of burglary and theft. He remained in the Lane County Jail on Tuesday night.

Bomb squad disposes

of 'serious' threat

Police called the bomb squad Tuesday after finding an improvised bomb on a man they had detained for breaking into parked cars.

The device posed a serious threat, Eugene police spokeswoman Kerry Delf said. The city's explosives disposal unit responded and blew up the device to "render it safe."

A Lane Transit District bus driver noticed two men on bikes who appeared to be casing parked cars near the bus station at 11 River Ave. about 10:30 a.m. Police arrived and detained a man who allegedly had methamphetamine, phony checks, stolen identification and the explosive in his possession, Delf said.

Leon Dirk Abbas, 26, was being held in the Lane County Jail on multiple charges, including possessing an explosive device, identity theft and drug possession.

The other man, described as white, in his mid-20s with short dark hair, rode off on his bike and disappeared into an apartment complex near Ruby and Lea avenues. Officers found his coat, which contained meth and more bad checks, Delf said.
