I-5 work to cause delays on Game Farm Road

For the next two weeks, Game Farm Road between Eugene and Springfield will be the road construction pinch point that motorists will want to avoid - unless they don't mind spending 20 minutes idling in traffic.

Crews will halt traffic while they place girders for the new Interstate 5 bridge over Game Farm Road. The closures will be between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays until March 1.

The Oregon Department of Transportation expects Monday to be the busiest closure day and advises the public to find alternate routes An official alternate route is a bannered highway that provides an alternate alignment for a highway. Originally, the term for these routes was "optional"; but in 1959, the designation became alternate.  on that day.

after Highway 101 wreck

A Coos Bay man has died from injuries he suffered in a violent wreck near Gold Beach.

Edward William Phelan Jr., 56, died Wednesday morning at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland. State police said he was the driver of a pickup truck that drifted across the northbound lanes of Highway 101 near Gold Beach on Tuesday and hit a guardrail.

The truck then swerved across both lanes and hit a concrete bridge over Myers Creek before swerving back across the road and hitting another bridge. His passenger, Jeran Michael Tibbets, 18, also of Coos Bay, was able to steer the truck to the middle of the road. It came to a stop facing south in the middle of the highway.

A preliminary investigation found that Phelan was not wearing a seat belt. Tibbets was wearing a seat belt and survived the wreck, state police said. The crash remains under investigation.
