Man dies from injuries sustained in pond crash

An 18-year-old Junction City man died Thursday from injuries he suffered in a Dec. 8 accident at Delta Ponds, police said.

Shortly after 10 a.m. that day, the car Eduardo Mercado was driving plunged into Delta Ponds off Goodpasture Island Road near Alexander Loop, police said.

Witnesses helped rescue Mercado as police and medics arrived. The car had to be lifted onto its side to reach Mercado, and emergency workers had to break out the windshield to get him out.

Police believe speed was a factor in the crash.
