The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is inviting public discussion of ways to manage Oregon's ocean shores and protect Western Snowy Plover habitat. "Open house" events are scheduled next week in Coos Bay and Newport.

Progress made on snowy plover habitat conservation plans will be outlined by park planners at each session, and public comments on their proposals will be taken. The Coos Bay open house is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Myrtlewood Room of the city library. The Newport meeting will be held Wednesday at the Hallmark Inn and Resort, 744 S.W. Elizabeth St.

Kayak adventure featured

"Kayaking the Nellie Juan River" in Alaska will be the subject of a University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  Outdoor Program presentation tonight in Eugene. Local kayaker Kevin Schrier will show slides and talk about an adventure he and a partner had last summer in one of Alaska's pristine glacial wilderness areas. The free program begins at 7:30 in the Outdoor Program offices, located in the basement of the Erb Memorial Union on campus.

G.I. Joe's honors club members

Members of hunting and fishing clubs and other outdoor organizations can get free expert advice and discounts on equipment Saturday at G.I. Joe's stores in Eugene, Salem and Portland.

Guides and manufacturing representatives will be on hand to answer questions, and those who show a current membership card in an outdoor organization can get a 20 percent discount on most fishing, hunting and automotive merchandise and 10 percent off guns and electronics during the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A free fishing trip to Kodiak, Alaska, will also be given away.

A refresher course for graduates of Wilderness Medicine Institute The Wilderness Medicine Institute of the National Outdoor Leadership School (WMI of NOLS) was founded in 1990 by Buck Tilton and Melissa Gray. WMI was originally to be called SOLO West, but was incorporated as the Wilderness Medicine Institute instead.  "first responder" courses will be offered in Eugene April 4-6. Wilderness First Responder Wilderness First Responders are individuals who are trained to respond to emergency situations in remote settings. They are part of a wide variety of wilderness medical professionals who work to deal with medical emergencies that occur in wilderness settings.  card-holders who fail to recertify re·cer·ti·fy

The River House Outdoor Program and the National Outdoor Leadership School are sponsoring the recertification recertification Recredentialing Graduate education A process in which a professional is periodically re-evaluated–eg, every 10 yrs by an accrediting body to assure continued provision of safe, high-quality health care  course, which includes 24 hours of instruction.

The registration fee is $195. Call the River House Outdoor Program at 682-5329 for details or to sign up.

Trails award nominees sought

The Oregon Recreation Trails Advisory Council is seeking nominations for its ninth annual Doug Newman Recreation Trails Achievement Award. Named in memory of a former council member, the award honors someone who made significant contributions to non-motorized trails within Oregon during the previous year. Last year's award went to longtime Pacific Crest Trail The Pacific Crest Trail (also known as the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail) is a long-distance mountain hiking and equestrian trail that runs from the United States border with Mexico to its border with Canada and follows the highest portion of the Sierra Nevada and  advocate Curtis Hardie of Bend.
