BRIEFLY.Byline: The Register-Guard Built to Spill to perform early work in its entirety At 8 p.m. Saturday at the McDonald Theatre, the hundreds of people who packed into the WOW Hall about a year ago to listen to Built to Spill will get a chance to go back in time with the band. Built to Spill will play its 1997 Warner Bros. debut, "Perfect From Now On," in its entirety. The album was the third full-length project from the band. Warner Bros. rereleased three Built to Spill albums on vinyl last year, including "Perfect," which a news release says was recorded three times before it finally came out. On the first go-round, band founder Doug Martsch tried to record all parts (except drums) himself, but he didn't like the results. Then he brought in other musicians, but the tapes from those sessions were heat-damaged. "The band rehearsed some more, then recorded the album a third time," a news release says. When released, it received what the release terms "widespread critical acclaim." The vinyl reissue includes the bonus track "Easy Way." Warner Bros. says in a news release that Built to Spill is working on its seventh album. Tickets for this weekend's concert are $20 in advance and $23 at the door, The McDonald Theatre is at 1010 Willamette St. Dan Jones goes solo as opening act Saturday Popular local singer and songwriter Dan Jones will take a break from rocking out with his band the Squids to play a solo set Saturday, opening for Karl Blau at the Wandering Goat. A news release describes Blau's sound as a "melting pot of the world's last 50 years of cultures, styles and periods." Blau also runs a record label, Kelp Lunacy Advanced Plagiarism Society, that has issued 28 full-length recordings. The albums are released on CD-R, hand-packaged and mailed to subscribers, the release says. The all-ages show starts at 9 p.m. at 268 Madison St. The cover is $5. - The Register-Guard |
