Ophelia's Place planning girls' relaxation workshop

Ophelia's Place will offer "Relaxation & Meditation" from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for girls ages 10 to 18 at 1577 Pearl St., Suite 200. The afternoon will include gentle, fun yoga and participation in relaxing guided meditations focusing on self-care and building confidence. Weather permitting, this workshop will be held outside. Victim advocate training offered by Kids' FIRST

Kids' FIRST, a center that provides support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services  to child victims of abuse and their families, has opened registration for its fall volunteer victim advocate training.

Volunteer advocates provide supervision as well as advocacy for the victim and family members during investigations by law enforcement and child welfare.

Advocates supply information about child abuse and treatment resources and make referrals to community agencies. They also provide information and education about the criminal justice system, as well as case management and follow-up services.

The application deadline is Sept. 1, with the training scheduled for Oct. 1, 3, 8, and 10. Advocates will be chosen through an application and interview process. Eligible individuals must be at least 18 years of age, able to pass a complete criminal background check, and willing to commit eight hours per week for a one-year period. Hours would fall between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Applicants are not required to have knowledge in legal or counseling services.

"Go Wild! a Scientific Look at the Magic in Our Own Backyard!" will use magic, puppetry puppetry

Art of creating and manipulating puppets in a theatrical show. Puppets are figures that are moved by human rather than mechanical aid. They may be controlled by one or several puppeteers, who are screened from the spectators.

The programs will be at the Springfield Public Library, 225 Fifth St., at 1 p.m. and again at 3 p.m. The shows are part of the library's summer reading program and are sponsored by the Friends of the Springfield Library. They are free and are recommended for children from preschool through fifth grade.

Bridge replacement group will meet in public library

The Community Advisory Group for the replacement of the Interstate 5 Willamette River Willamette River

River, northwestern Oregon, U.S. It flows north for 300 mi (485 km) into the Columbia River near Portland. Oregon's most populous cities are in its valley. The Fremont Bridge, a steel arch with a main span of 1,225 ft (373 m), crosses the river at Portland.
 Bridge will meet from 10:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Singer Room of the Eugene Public Library, 100 West 10th Ave. Meetings are open to the public.

OSU forum will examine offshore aquaculture aquaculture, the raising and harvesting of fresh- and saltwater plants and animals. The most economically important form of aquaculture is fish farming, an industry that accounts for an ever increasing share of world fisheries production.  

NEWPORT - Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center is hosting a two-day forum that will explore the feasibility of developing offshore aquaculture programs in the Pacific Northwest.

Chris Langdon, an OSU professor at the center, is coordinating the forum. The event is designed to be informational and will explore the potential rewards as well as the downsides of offshore aquaculture in this region.

Speakers at the forum include regulators, community leaders, aquaculture industry representatives, fishing industry representatives, economists and scientists. Among the topics: environmental, economic, biological and management issues, food safety, siting and engineering challenges, potential business models, and fish and shellfish species suitable for the Pacific Northwest.

The forum, which is sponsored by numerous federal and state agencies as well as private foundations, is limited to 125 participants. Information about the program is available online at oregonstate.edu/conferences/aquaculture2008.
