Many homeless in apartment jolt

VAN NUYS -- Seventeen residents of a two-story apartment building found themselves displaced Tuesday after structural problems caused the building to jolt so violently they thought there had been an earthquake, authorities said.

Officers were patrolling the 1400 block of Delano Street near Kester Avenue about 10:30 p.m. Monday when a resident ran outside and asked whether there had been a quake, police said.

What caused the jolt -- structural damage or moving soil -- was not immediately determined.

Firefighters and Building and Safety officials evacuated the residents and red-tagged the building, meaning no one is allowed back inside. American Red Cross American Red Cross: see Red Cross.  personnel were helping the residents find a place to stay.

Man is wounded in gang shooting

NORTH HILLS -- A man was injured in a gang-related drive-by shooting drive-by shooting Public health A phenomenon in which one or more persons–commonly members of street gangs, open fire à la Al Capone from moving vehicles, often in retaliation for an alleged wrong-doing by a rival gang  Tuesday, police said.

After the 5:45 p.m. shooting in the 8700 block of Parthenia Place, police took what they described as "possible suspects" into custody, Lee said.

Board to revisit 8 Watts charters

The Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  board voted Tuesday to bring back for consideration a previously denied petition by successful charter operator Green Dot Public Schools to open eight charters in Watts.

The board will take action Sept. 11 on whether to give Green Dot founder Steve Barr Steven Charles (Steve) Barr (born September 8, 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri) is a former starting pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for the Boston Red Sox (1974-1975) and Texas Rangers (1976). Barr batted and threw left handed. He is the uncle of pitcher Ryan Madson. , a mayoral ally, the charters in addition to expanding improvement efforts at the challenged high school fed by middle and elementary schools.

The board voted 5-2, with Marguerite LaMotte and Julie Korenstein opposing the proposal. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's four allies on the board and former board President Marlene Canter supported the motion.

The school board, under pressure from the teachers union, in late March rejected Barr's first effort to transform the school, in a low-income neighborhood racked by gang violence, that scored in the bottom 10 percent on state achievement tests this year.

Sotelo resigns from fire panel

Former Fire Commission President Dalila Sotelo has resigned from the panel after taking a job with the city's Community Redevelopment Agency.

Sotelo resigned from McCormack Baron Salazar, an affordable-housing real estate developer in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , to become the CRA's deputy chief of operations for housing policy.

Sotelo, who resigned from the commission effective Aug. 21, could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Fruit fly spraying to start today

GLENDALE -- State agriculture crews will treat an 8.6-square-mile area of Glendale beginning today to eradicate Oriental fruit flies, county officials said Tuesday.

Two fruit flies were found in fruit trees in Glendale last week.

The state Department of Food and Agriculture will begin a treatment known as "male annihilation," which involves applying a small spot of bait on utility poles and tree trunks.

The bait, which contains a small amount of Naled pesticide, will be placed 6 feet to 8 feet up on the poles and trees. The bait will be put in about 600 spots per square mile. Male flies feed on the bait and die before they can mate.
