Sign up for the Family Boat Building event at the 2007 Port of Toledo Wooden Boat Show. The event provides an opportunity for families or groups to build their own small boat in just three days. Work begins Aug. 24, and the launching will be the afternoon of Aug. 26. Master boat builder Carl Chamberlain of Port Townsend, Wash., and other volunteers will assist in the process. Salmon derby slated in Winchester Bay area ... Tickets are on sale for the 11th annual Labor Day Weekend Salmon Derby in Winchester Bay and the lower Umpqua River near Reedsport. The event is a fundraiser for the Gardiner-Reedsport-Winchester Bay Salmon Trout Enhancement Program, a group of volunteers that rears and releases about 80,000 salmon smolts in the lower Umpqua estuary each year. The derby offers a $500 prize for the heaviest salmon caught over the weekend. (Last year's winner weighed 40.26 pounds). There is also a $150 prize for the largest salmon each day. Every legal salmon weighed in during the derby, regardless of size, earns the angler who caught it an entry in a $100 "weigh-in drawing." Derby hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 1 and 2 and 6 a.m. to noon Sept. 3. The entry fee, good for all three days, is $10 per person or $25 per private boat party of three or more anglers.
