Field Lab group to meet Thursday

SIMI VALLEY -- The Santa Susana Field Lab Workgroup will meet Thursday night to discuss a recent court ruling requiring the U.S. Department of Energy to conduct a through study of Area IV.

The group also will discuss proposed state legislation mandating that the site be cleaned up to federal standards, and the Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and  analysis of whether the field lab should be a superfund site. The meeting will run from 6:30 to 10 at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, 3050 Los Angeles Ave.

Reward offered for killer driver

RESEDA -- The Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  on Tuesday announced a $50,000 reward for information that helps find a motorist who intentionally rammed a Honda Civic into a young man crossing a street in Reseda with his brother.

Peter Martinez, 20, died Saturday of injuries he suffered two days earlier.

Peter and his 18-year-old brother, Alex, were crossing White Oak Avenue at Wyandotte Street about 2:50 p.m. Thursday when the driver of the Honda nearly hit them, police said. According to LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

Power demand peaked at 5,466 megawatts, according to the city utility. The previous high this year was 5,388 megawatts July 26.

Power officials asked residents to conserve power by skipping the laundry for a couple of days and adjusting thermostats to 78 degrees.

One business suffers damage

NORTH HOLLYWOOD -- A fire at a strip mall damaged one business Tuesday night, but firefighters kept the flames from spreading, authorities said.

The fire began about 9:45 p.m. at the strip mall at 7300 N. Fulton Ave., said Ron Myers, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is the agency that provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Los Angeles. . About 40 firefighters put out the blaze in about 20 minutes. Nobody was injured.

The ordinance is aimed at reducing the number of unwanted animals euthanized in city shelters. It would be modeled on an Assembly bill proposed by Assemblyman Lloyd Levine, D-Van Nuys. Levine withdrew the bill after widespread opposition from animal breeders.

The city ordinance would provide an exception so licensed breeders would not have to spay or neuter their pets.
