BRIEFLY.Motorcyclist robs bank Tuesday in Springfield SPRINGFIELD - Police are looking for a man who allegedly robbed the Washington Mutual Savings Bank branch at 5703 Main St. about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The man is described as being white, 20 to 40 years old, heavyset and may have had a dark mustache and stubble. He was wearing a full-face silver motorcycle helmet, a light-blue denim jacket, black jeans, black motorcycle gloves and black boots. According to Springfield police, the man first confronted an employee at a customer service desk, waved a black garbage sack and demanded money. The employee told the man she didn't have money at the desk. The man then approached the teller counter and made the same demand to a teller, who filled the sack with currency. The man walked out of the bank and left on a large-framed motorcycle similar to a Harley-Davidson. The motorcycle had a maroon gas tank, duct tape covering the brand of the motorcycle and was loud as if it had muffler problems, witnesses told police. The man rode eastbound on Main Street. Nobody was injured and the man did not display a weapon or indicate he was armed. Anyone with information should call the police at 726-3714. REGION Junction City names new mayor at meeting JUNCTION CITY - Dwight Coon was appointed mayor of Junction City by the City Council at its meeting Tuesday night. He succeeds Larry Crowley, who stepped down as mayor July 9 due to resurgent bladder cancer. He died July 16, a week after his resignation. Coon, 45, the council president, had been acting mayor since Crowley resigned. He was elected to the City Council in 2001. He is a grass seed farmer. Crowley, who was 63 when he died, lived his whole life in Junction City and had been mayor or a city councilor for 26 years. Police identify man killed by pickup truck JUNCTION CITY - The Oregon State Police have identified the man who was killed Monday morning on Highway 99 West south of Junction City. Cornelius Round, 27, whose last known address was in Kansas but was described as a transient, was killed while walking in a traffic lane about two miles south of the town, police said Tuesday. He was struck by a southbound pickup truck while in the righthand lane, walking with his back to traffic and wearing dark clothing about 3:30 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The pickup's driver was uninjured, and police do not expect to cite or charge him with any crimes. NORTHWEST Nebraska kayaker dies on North Umpqua River GLIDE - A woman from Nebraska drowned Tuesday afternoon while kayaking on the North Umpqua River, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said. Kristi Adams, 20, of North Platte, Neb., was kayaking with three others about 4:30 p.m. at Colliding Rivers near Glide, east of Roseburg. Adams went through a narrow spot and was out of her kayak when she came up against a log and became stuck underwater. According to witnesses, she was submerged for a long time and became unconscious before firefighters could remove her. She was transported by helicopter to Rogue Valley Hospital in Medford where she was declared dead. According to witnesses, Adams had never been in a kayak before Tuesday. |
