Man sentenced for animal cruelty

Martin Jay Gomez pleaded no contest Monday for owning seven sick boxers, including two puppies suffering from fractures or severe head trauma, Animal Services officials said.

"This case is an example of the kind of cruelty that is no longer tolerated in our city," Animal Services General Manager Ed Boks said in a statement.

"If you are going to abuse or neglect an animal, you can plan on going to jail."

The U.S. Olympic Committee's evaluation committee will visit Los Angeles today as part of a two-day tour to determine whether the city is equipped to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.

2 gang suspects arrested in chase

NORTH HOLLYWOOD -- Two gang members in an older model sport utility vehicle were taken into custody late Wednesday when a police officer used a pursuit intervention technique to end the chase, police said.

The chase began when officers saw a suspect get into the vehicle with a weapon on Daventry Street in Pacoima at 4:35 p.m., police said.
