Driver in custody after car chase

PACOIMA - A driver who eluded police for about a half-hour and escaped several attempts to stop him was taken into custody Monday, authorities said.

The pursuit began at around 3:05 p.m. when a driver allegedly attempted to hit Los Angeles School Police Department officers with a black late-model Impala, said Sgt. Aaron Pisarzewicz of the school police.

The Los Angeles Police Department took over the pursuit at the request of the school police.

"LAPD attempted four times unsuccessfully to (stop the driver with their patrol cars) and eventually put spike strips down," Pisarzewicz said.

The pursuit ended and the man was taken into custody at Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Paxton Street, the same intersection the pursuit began, Pisarzewicz said.
