Man accused in sex assaults

Body discovered near school

PACOIMA -- The body of a woman was found Thursday in a Pacoima neighborhood, less than a mile away from Telfair Elementary School elementary school: see school. .

Burbank drafts smoking ban

BURBANK -- The city is one step closer to butting out in public areas.

The City Council has ordered staff to draft an ordinance that would restrict smoking in outdoor shopping areas, apartment and condominium common areas, restaurant and bar patios, parks, transit stations and the downtown district.

Two boys hurt in park attack

The Turkish government has denied that a genocide occurred, and blamed the slaughter of Armenians on the social upheaval during the Ottoman Empire's collapse.

Schiff plans to introduce a resolution seeking federal recognition of what many have deemed the first deliberate massacre of an ethnic group in the 20th century.

Families offered credits on taxes

Low- and moderate-income families with children may be eligible to receive $4,500 thanks to the Earned Income Tax Credit The United States federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a refundable tax credit that reduces or eliminates the taxes that low-income married working people pay (such as payroll taxes) and also frequently operates as a wage subsidy for low-income workers. , officials said Thursday.

To claim the credit, taxpayers must be U.S. citizens or legal residents with valid Social Security numbers.

A married couple with an income of less than $38,348 and two or more children is eligible for a $4,536 credit. A family earning less than $34,001 with one child can receive a $2,747 credit.

Single workers between the ages of 25 and 64 who earn less than $12,120 and do not have children can receive a $412 credit.

Families can call the county hotline at 211 or visit the Web site at www.eitc-la.com to see if they qualify for the credit.

Body of man found in Gorman

GORMAN -- The body of a male was discovered at Hungry Valley State Park Thursday in Gorman, according to the sheriff's department.

The body was found in some bushes at the park at 2:43 p.m., said Capt. Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.

Sheriff's homicide detectives were sent to investigate the circumstances of his death.
