Chivas USA expected to name Preki as new head coach

Preki, current assistant coach with Club Deportivo Chivas USA, is expected to be named head coach of the third-year Major League Soccer franchise today.

Preki, born Predrag Radosavljevic in Belgrade of then-Yugoslavia in 1963, had been an assistant under Bob Bradley, who left the team in early December to become interim coach of the U.S. men's national team.

Preki had a distinguished MLS career that featured 79 goals and 112 assists in 10 seasons. There were believed to be two other finalists for the position: Fernando Quirarte, who formerly coached Jaguares; and Paco Ramirez, a Mexico national team assistant at the last World Cup.

MOTOR SPORTS: Benny Parsons, a taxi driver who became a NASCAR champion in 1973, died Tuesday from lung-cancer complications, his son Keith said. He was 65.

Parsons died in Charlotte, N.C., where he had been hospitalized since Dec. 26.

A member of NASCAR's 50greatest drivers and a lovable fixture at the track, Parsons won 21 races, including the 1975 Daytona 500, and 20 poles. He was the first Cup competitor to qualify for a race faster than 200mph, going 200.176 mph at the 1982 Winston 500 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

FOOTBALL: California coach Jeff Tedford has agreed to a four-year contract extension that will keep the two-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year with the Golden Bears through 2013.

Denver Broncos tight ends coach Tim Brewster will become the new head coach at the University of Minnesota.

A former Penn State defensive lineman was arrested in Bellefonte, Pa., in the killing of a student who was stabbed 93times last spring.

LaVon Chisley, 23, of Waldorf, Md., was to be arraigned on counts of first- and third-degree murder in the death of Langston Carraway, said Patton Township Police Chief John Petrick.

BASKETBALL: Chris Webber signed a $650,000, prorated contract -- the veteran's minimum -- with his hometown Detroit Pistons.

``This is definitely special, I never thought I would be a Detroit Piston,'' Webber said at a news conference at Auburn Hills, Mich. ``I'm here in the summer, but being home with this team makes me feel good.''

HOCKEY: St. Louis acquired center Yan Stastny from Boston in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2007 NHL draft.
