Sexual assault suspect sought

VAN NUYS -- Police are asking the public to help them find a man suspected of sexually assaulting an 85-year-old woman, authorities said Wednesday.

The assault occurred about 11:30 p.m. Sunday when the suspect broke into the woman's home through a rear window, went directly to the bedroom and committed the assault, police said.

The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was treated for a minor cut and bruises.

The suspect was described as an African-American man in his 20s, about 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 175 pounds, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with USA written across the front.

Anyone with information about the assault is asked to call Van Nuys sexual assault detectives at (818) 374-0040. On weekends and evenings, call the 24-hour toll-free number at (877) 529-3855.

Man alive after shooting himself

NORTH HOLLYWOOD -- A North Hollywood man showed stable vital signs Wednesday after accidentally shooting himself in the chest, authorities said.

The victim, whose name was withheld, was cleaning a handgun at his home in the 4600 block of Cahuenga Boulevard, near the Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. Boulevard closed for bridge work

SHERMAN OAKS -- A stretch of Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. It was also U.S.  in the vicinity of the Sherman Oaks Galleria Sherman Oaks Galleria is a shopping mall and business center located in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood of Los Angeles, California at the corner of Ventura and Sepulveda Boulevards in the San Fernando Valley.

Locals colloquially refer to the mall simply as "the Galleria.

The closures are related to the partial demolition of the Ventura Boulevard Bridge as part of a $46 million improvement project at the 101/405 Interchange, she said.
