1 gunman sought in four robberies

Four armed robberies committed within just 45 minutes over the weekend were likely carried out by a single gunman, police said Monday.

The man, who was about 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighed about 170 pounds, began his crime spree at about 3 p.m. and hit businesses in North Hollywood and Pacoima, said David Escoto of the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Police Department's Foothill Division. Bullet ricochets, strikes officers

PANORAMA CITY -- A bullet fired Monday by a police officer at a dog while officers were responding to a home burglary call ricocheted and struck one officer in the arm and one in the toe.

Los Angeles police Officer Martha Garcia said four burglary suspects, who were inside the house in the 8700 block of Roslyndale Avenue when police fired on the dog, were taken into custody. Garcia did not know how the dog fared.

Tanker collision closes freeway

BURBANK -- The westbound Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. It is the principal east-west route through Ventura County and in the southern San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County.  was closed for six hours Monday after a morning rush- hour collision at Buena Vista Street between a tanker loaded with fuel and another vehicle, authorities reported.

The tanker lost about 100 gallons of fuel before the Burbank Fire Department responded with eight units and got the leak under control.

The freeway was closed from about 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Stranded driver killed by truck

City seeking toys, food for gifts

The city of San Fernando's Christmas Basket Program is seeking donations of food, toys and cold-weather gear for children, families and seniors.

 announced Monday the hiring of an assistant U.S. attorney to head up his efforts to combat gangs in the city.

Delgadillo said prosecutor Bruce Riordan, who has served as deputy chief for the Organized Crime and Terrorism Section since 2002, will be responsible for supervising 25 attorneys involved with gang prosecutions.

Riordan, who Delgadillo aides said is not related to former Mayor Richard Riordan, has been a federal prosecutor since 1991 and led task force investigations into a number of Los Angeles gangs. He begins his new job on Jan. 2.
